Firstly, jury trials were introduced in the Russian Empire as a result of
the Judicial reform of Alexander II in 1864. After the October Revolution
they were abolished and introduced again in the Russian Federation for
certain crimes in 1993. The Federal Constitution of that year also
stipulates that, until the abolition of the death penalty, all defendants in
a case that may result in a death sentence are entitled to a jury trial.[10]
