Week 10 to decide five survivors!
The 2009-10 Euroleague regular season ends in Week 10 on Wednesday and
Thursday with the promise of high drama in all four groups. A total of 11
teams have reached the Top 16, which leaves five more chances for other
teams to extend their seasons into the next round. The most spots remaining
are in Group A, where there are also the most complicated scenarios
possible - including a four-way tie for the coveted third and fourth places.
What's more, those four teams go head-to-head, as Cibona (2-7) hosts Asvel
(3-6) and Fenerbahce (3-6) welcomes Zalgiris (2-7). Asvel and Fenerbahce
know that with victories, they qualify to the Top 16. All other scenarios,
including that of losing teams still qualifying, depend on cross-results and
point differences. Just as important, Group A decides its winner as
Barcelona (9-0) hosts Montepaschi (8-1). Two games - Lietuvos Rytas (4-5)
vs. Unicaja (6-3) and Orleans (2-7) vs. Efes Pilsen (3-6) - will decide the
last Top 16 qualifier from Group B. That will be L. Rytas if it wins, but
Unicaja has a chance to finish first if it wins, depending on the Partizan
(4-5) vs. Olympiacos (7-2) result. In Group C, besides a showdown for first
place between 7-2 co-leaders CSKA and Caja Laboral, the other two games -
Roma (3-6) vs. Olimpija (1-8) and Maroussi (3-6) vs. Maccabi (6-3) - will
decide the group's fourth qualifier. Maroussi has the inside edge to
qualification if it can stop Maccabi or if Roma loses. And in Group D, the
fourth and final Last 16 berth depends on two games: AJ Milano (3-6) vs.
Real Madrid (7-2) and Prokom (3-6) vs. Khimki (6-3). Either home team could
make it with a victory, but if Milano wins, it has the tie-break advantages.
On the downside for Milano, its opponent, Real Madrid, must win to finish in
first place, while Prokom's opponent, Khimki, will finish third regardless
of the outcome.
